Many gig jobs are just too similar to paid employment for the façade of independence to be maintained. The fiction that gig workers each run their own independent business is crumbling. To forestall genuine reform, they advocate half-measures that seem to support gig workers, without going all the way to treat them like the rest of the workforce. This fundamental choice in how to regulate gig work is highlighted by contrasting announcements this month in Ontario and Europe. If the Ford government really wants to help gig workers, it will reject the OWRAC model, and look for inspiration across the Atlantic.
