The Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) is enhancing its presence in Ghana as the West African country prepares to build its first nuclear power station. The country is well on its way to position itself as a key player in nuclear research and technology in Africa. It has established a Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) and constructed a Ghana Research Reactor-1 (GHARR-1). GHARR-1, commissioned in 1995, is run by the National Nuclear Research Institution, a sub-division of GAEC. Ghana is also now in the process of selecting a vendor to establish its first nuclear power station for carbon-free energy.
