Getting to the heart of America’s racial discord

For three days in June of 1943, African Americans and White Americans battled in the streets of Detroit; an ugly riot broke out, fueled by historic injustices, continued discrimination and malicious rumors. A mob of White Americans threw an African American mother and baby into the Detroit River, went one story. Then in August, Harlem exploded in racial violence with six African Americans killed, once again fueled by a rumor. On Christmas Day, 1944, an African American enlisted man heading back to camp was shot dead by two drunken White Marines. Early in the morning of the 26th, a jeep loaded with White servicemen opened fire on the African American depot.
