The National Post guide to moons Black moonA second new moon in a calendar month. It’s the elusive “black moon,” the rare occurrence of a second new moon within a single calendar month. There is nothing inherently weird about the black moon, it’s simply a different kind of new moon, the phase of the moon when the earth’s satellite is reflecting no sunlight. Like any celestial event, however, the black moon does have ties to the occult, with pagans mixed on whether black moons are a superior time to cast spells.
