In India, it was a Scottish doctor who took charge of the Darjeeling colonial settlement where tea cultivation was introduced. These stories and hundreds more about the experiences of Scottish people living around the world are on display until Oct. 1 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Scarborough. The Scottish Diaspora Tapestry is a colourful exhibit featuring 300 hand-stitched panels that celebrates the lives of Scottish people around the world. Most of the 300 panels, three of which were stitched in Scarborough, hang from a unique display created by Bruce McCowan, a member of St. Andrew’s church. A year ago, McCowan decided he wanted to build a replica of Wales’ Menai Suspension Bridge, which was designed by Scottish engineer Thomas Telford.
