Cities require careful planning — especially ones that have to support some 18 million souls. When it comes to the heavy downpours at this time of the year, Dhaka is always woefully unprepared. Right now, roads lack adequate water drainage capacities, leading to insufferable traffic jams that not only take a personal toll on city-dwellers, but also sets us back in terms of business and commerce. A growing mega-city like Dhaka must prepare for the inevitable, which means better drainage, better sewage systems, and better traffic management. Heavy rains do not come as a surprise — we need to start being ready for them.
