Expand Close Ireland midfielder James McClean is pictured with his two-year-old daughter Willow at the unveiling of Aviva's new Sensory Hub in Aviva Stadium. The FAI met again with the League today; the bald reality is that each is as enfeebled as the other. And the League of Ireland, as the putative apex of the football pyramid, is most at risk. The one-time "difficult child" – ironically the poster boy for a Euro 2016 campaign which did nothing consequential for Irish football – is now effectively orphaned, with all due deference to the emergence of emergency leaders in Abbottstown. There is a light, perhaps, that never goes out; that metaphorical candle for the diaspora flickering so feebly in the window, offering hope in a time of darkness.
