George Boyd on his play Consecrated Ground

This Jan. 19, 1999, segment from CBC-TV's Midday contains scenes from George Boyd's play Consecrated Ground and an interview with the playwright at Africville Park in Halifax, then called Seaview Park. The play is based in the former Black community of Africville, which existed on the shores of the Bedford Basin in north-end Halifax for 150 years until it was razed by the city in the 1960s. Boyd said he always wanted to write a play about Africville because of its significance in Nova Scotian and Canadian history. He said it was important for him not to romanticize the experience of living in the community, and spoke of his recollections of Africville. Boyd, who was also the first Black network news anchor in Canada, died on Jul.
