"I think there's a tendency in recent years of these commemorations becoming more of a spectacle rather than a genuine remembrance,'' columnist Derek Burrows. I'm all in favour of Remembrance Sunday being observed in Britain, just as we here in New Zealand pay our respects to the victims of war on Anzac Day. I was born in England during the Second World War but was thankfully young enough to remember only the VE Day celebrations. So, I believe it's only right to remember those sacrifices but I think there's a tendency in recent years of these commemorations becoming more of a spectacle rather than a genuine remembrance. While Remembrance Sunday is a poignant reminder of the futility and horrors of war, there's a growing danger in the current political climate of the commemoration taking on a more sinister nationalistic tone.
