Fury as English hospital refuses to treat Welsh patients despite being close to the border

An English hospital is refusing to offer care for new Welsh patients except for emergencies or maternity cases. The decision will impact thousands of people who live in North Wales close to the border with England. The controversial move follows a dispute over the hospital’s funding arrangements for Welsh patients. Trust boss Susan Gilby said it was a ‘difficult decision taken with great reluctance’. The trust said it treated 23,500 Welsh patients in 2016-17 at a cost of £31.2million.
