Funeral director 'can't even fathom' how many services held during the Spanish Flu

The business has been through several difficult seasons of influenza, but to date, the worst remains the 1918 Spanish Flu. Kevin Sweryd, Funeral Director, Bardal Funeral Home, shows ledger of funerals held during the 1918 Spanish flu. The ledger which captured the year the Spanish Flu arrived in Winnipeg only covered eight months — from August 1918 to March 1919. During the Spanish Flu, Bardal Funeral Home went from holding five funerals a week, on average, to 45 funerals a week. In the early 1900s, Bardal Funeral Home created a makeshift motorized hearse by mounting a carriage to a Model T truck.
