Immigrants urge N.B. to be leader and extend voting rights for municipal elections

MLA Keith Chiasson says the Liberals plan to reintroduce a bill that would amend the Municipal Elections Act. This is because there aren't a lot of differences in rights between being a Canadian permanent resident and a citizen. Myer Siemiatycki, a politics professor at Ryerson University, says voting rights in municipal elections could help newcomers form an attachment to the country. Before the Charter of Rights and Freedoms was adopted, Canadian citizens and citizens from Commonwealth countries could vote in Canadian elections.
