From tangihanga to maramataka: Using Māori astronomy in mental health

Maramataka is a traditional Māori practice of using knowledge of the star systems, moon cycles, tides and the environment. Supplied Dr Rangi Matamua is a Māori astronomy expert and the first Māori to win of the prime minister's prestigious science prizes. It was their first session, and some talked about planting and gardening, others shared childhood traumas and mental health struggles. He’s been criticised by Māori who say he shouldn’t be using maramataka in this way, but he rejects that.
