French authorities have stopped fewer than half of all migrants boats crossing Channel this year

French authorities have stopped fewer than half of the migrant boats intercepted in the Channel this year and an MP is warning that a Jungle-style Calais camp may return. Dover and Deal MP Charlie Elphicke believes a return of the Calais Jungle - in which 10,000 migrants lived until 2016 - could happen unless French authorities act. Calls have previously been made for the French authorities to do more to stop the people smugglers who charge desperate migrants thousands to make the crossing from Calais. Calais MP Pierre-Henri Dumont told the BBC up to 10 boats are being stopped from departing every night. He added: 'We stop maybe 90 per cent of the total of all the boats leaving the French coast.'
