Without the defendants present, a hearing got underway Friday into charges against Penn State fraternity brothers in the death of a pledge last year. The preliminary hearing involves 11 of the 26 young men charged in connection with the February 2017 death of Timothy Piazza after a night of hazing and drinking at the now-shuttered Beta Theta Pi fraternity house. It is to determine if the state has enough evidence to take the case to trial. The judge allowed the hearing to go on without the young men present. The attorney general's office has said its review of the case is ongoing and has not indicated its plans for other defendants.
