A former top executive at CBC is suing the national broadcaster for wrongful dismissal saying he was “scapegoated” in the wake of the scandal surrounding Jian Ghomeshi. In a statement of defence, the CBC says Spencer failed to conduct an “appropriate” investigation and that he “deliberately misled” management about the allegations against Ghomeshi. After he was fired by the CBC in October 2014, the 48-year-old Ghomeshi faced trial for multiple criminal allegations. Earlier this month, a charge of sexual assault against Ghomeshi involving former Q producer Kathryn Borel was withdrawn. Rubin’s scathing report found that CBC management “condoned” alleged abusive behaviour by Ghomeshi and criticized a culture that failed to protect employees from alleged harassment.
