The head of Britain’s armed forces is paid nearly twice as much as his US counterpart even though he commands a military that is almost a tenth of the size. Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach has an annual salary of between £255,000 and £259,000 before tax, according to data published by the Ministry of Defence. General Joseph Dunford, the US chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, is paid the dollar equivalent of about £133,800, topped up with a personal allowance of £2,820, according to his office in Washington. The US defence budget stands at about $639 billion (£451 billion) compared with UK defence spending of about £36 billion.
