Sowmya Bhat of Mathru Educational Trust for the Blind began losing her eyesight aged four and cannot see today. She started learning Braille from Class 8 — a major challenge when the age for language learning has passed. Despite this, Ms. Bhat mastered Braille in three languages — English, Hindi and Kannada — and scored 579/625 in the SSLC exams, achieving centum in Hindi. Her school principal Gubbi R. Mukhta said she was proud about Ms. Bhat, whom she described as a fast learner.
