I wish to point out some relevant and factual information that we hope could help balance the readers’ views of the current situation in the sector. We have always been a net rice importer due to our fast growing population. This discouraged many rice farmers because of the low palay prices that prevailed in the early part of 2019. Second, I would like to agree with Mr. Ronquillo that indeed the Philippines has always been a net importer of agricultural products—for decades now. Lastly — we also agree with Mr. Ronquillo that agriculture in the Philippines must consider the principles of logistics and supply chains.
