Last week Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Simon Upton, warned tourism growth is putting pressure on New Zealand's unique environment. The report titled Pristine, Popular…Imperilled, signals that we can no longer be complacent about how we're managing tourism in New Zealand. A business-as-usual approach to growing our tourism sector will have devastating consequences for New Zealand's natural environment, the very drawcard we make our living from. We had 3.8 million people visit New Zealand last year and by 2025 we want to increase that number to five million. To weave the ideas of kaitiakitanga into both our tourism businesses and our visitors themselves.
