Most won’t know each other until they gather at the starting line, but together, they’ll be working for a greater purpose: to empower young women through running. The 100-mile ultra relay is organized by the Girls Gotta Run Foundation (GGRF), an Ethiopia-based nonprofit dedicated to changing the lives of women since its inception in 2007. Through education, running, life skills, savings, and entrepreneurship, the foundation hopes to combat the many challenges—child marriage and access to education, in particular—facing young women. Seidel was introduced to Girls Gotta Run in the fall of 2017, when she was invited to speak on the nonprofit’s panel for International Day of the Girl.
