Fire over the Sahara


The Sahara Desert has long been a zone of conflict. For over 10 centuries it was the place where North African Arabs who are mainly Muslims encountered Black Africans who are mainly Christians or animists. But the Sahara region has seen an outbreak of new wars in recent years. Since its government was toppled in 1991, the country has been in a state of civil war. The situation is not much better in nearby South Sudan.
