Emergency services were called to the blaze at Bucklands Crossing, in East Otago, about 11.30am on Friday. Initially four helicopters equipped with monsoon buckets and about three ground crews were fighting the blaze, which was understood to be about 10 hectares in size. However, by 7.30pm, the fire was burning through about 16ha of pine trees and an extra three crews were sent to help with the effort.
