A helicopter drops a bucket of water on a grass fire north of Masterton on Thursday. A 1000-square-metre building at the Otaihanga Transfer Station in Kāpiti has been involved in a large fire. A Kāpiti Coast District Council worker at the scene of the waste facility, on Otaihanga Rd, near Southward Car Museum, said the area was thick with smoke when the fire broke out. Meanwhile a grass fire took hold in a paddock 3 kilometres north of Masterton on Thursday afternoon. A helicopter, three appliances, 16 firefighters and one tanker were used to fight the fire which was under control by 4pm.
