Steve McQueen's film The Sand Pebbles was showing at the Patea Civic. It was made in 1966, so had taken a while to get there. * The Hawera stayer Domodossola and another Hawera horse, Dolapal, took out the Totalisator Agency Board double at the Wanganui Jockey Club's summer meeting. * Built very close to a Maori pa of the same name, a new two-storey ward block at the Hawera hospital was named Te Ramanui by the hospital committee who heard the matron, Miss S M Watts, describe the new wards as "heaven". * Maori and pakeha stood shoulder-to-shoulder at Pukearuhe in North Taranaki as they commemorated 100 years of peace between the two races and remembered the death of the Rev John Whiteley on February 13, 1869.
