Darker is the second volume in James’s project to retell the story of Grey and Anastasia Steele’s BDSM relationship through the eyes of the millionaire businessman. In a book review for the Telegraph, Anthony Cummins pointed out that “the timing doesn’t seem good” for the latest instalment in the Fifty Shades juggernaut. Ebook sales are not included in the total, and the magazine said that the digital edition of Grey sold more than 660,000 copies in its first month on sale. “When the first two came out there was certainly a great curiosity about them; it had real novelty value: a modern erotic book for women. Despite her criticisms, Rosewell acknowledged that James has helped to legitimise erotic reading.
