Beyond the population of schoolchildren in Argentina, the smaller amount of children’s books purchased for public schools could affect the publishing industry. This year, the Ministry of Education will purchase fewer books for public schools around Argentina, according to an article by Clarín. The Education Ministry had reportedly decreased the number of children’s books for primary and secondary schools after noticing that the bulk of purchased books had not been utilized properly. While the number of books purchased for public schools has fluctuated highly throughout the last five years, they have never fallen quite as low as this past year. The ministry purchased 3.35 million textbooks for primary schools this past year and 8.3 million novels and children’s books, according to data Clarín culled from PROMAGE.
