KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has yet to decide if the smoking ban in restaurants announced by the federal government will take effect in the state starting Jan 1. State Deputy Chief Minister Jaujan Sambakong says, like Sarawak, Sabah too, had its own local ordinance on the matter. “I will consult with the state cabinet first on Putrajaya’s smoking ban in restaurants nationwide before proceeding with the move,” he said in a text message when asked to comment on Sarawak’s stand on the ban. Recently, Sarawak’s Local Government and Housing Minister Sim Kui Hian said Sarawak had autonomy on the matter under its Local Government Ordinance. Offenders face a fine of RM10,000, while eateries that failed to enforce the ban would be fined RM2,500.
