Federal PC Leader Andrew Scheer and Mayor John Tory talk gun control in first formal meeting

Toronto Mayor John Tory, who is pushing for tighter federal gun controls, found some common ground in a meeting with federal Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer whose party has long championed gun owners’ rights. “We actually agreed on the need for the federal government to do more to stop the flow of illegal firearms coming over the border and for the illegal trafficking of domestic firearms,” Scheer told reporters at city hall after the pair had, in private, their first formal meeting. Tory said they also talked about the possibility of using technology to trace guns sold to criminals. “Right now it is as simple as a file being used to take the serial number off and then those guns become untraceable and get sold to criminals who use them to kill people,” the mayor said. Tory is pushing the federal Liberal government to impose controls beyond new proposals including gun sellers keeping records of inventories and sales for at least 20 years, and hunting rifle and shotgun buyers being required to present a firearms licence the vendor would have to check.
