TuSimple, a dual U.S.-Chinese company developing autonomous truck technology, says it's created the industry's first vision system able to see vehicles and objects up to 1000 meters ahead. But TuSimple’s 1000-meter vision system is achieved through a combination of a specialized camera and algorithms developed by Hou’s engineers. At 1000 meters, “we safely know what lane that vehicle is in, which is very important. At 500 to 1000 meters, you have an added level of safety but you also get the ability to operate as efficiently as possible to cut fuel consumption by as much as 15%, he said. Cameras aren’t good at collecting data at night so for now TuSimple’s long-distance vision system only achieves up to 1000 meters in daylight, Hou said.
