Faroes Islands: The beguilingly remote Nordic nation where adventure


The 7.4m-high, sky-blue monolith is more fun than functional, but no postcards would have been sent when the Faroes Islands “closed for maintenance” in April 2019. One recipient was the Faroe Islands’ highest mountain, Slættaratindur, on the second-largest island of Eysturoy. Guðrið Højgaard, director at Visit Faroe Islands, says, “It resonated with the zeitgeist – the fact that destinations were talking about over-tourism but not doing much about it. As Højgaard puts it, the islands want to “be sure to manage tourism before tourism manages us”.
