Farming leader urges Britain to open up to world

Farming leader urges Britain to open up to worldBeef + Lamb New Zealand chairman James Parsons and southern South Island farmer director Andrew Morrison are in Britain, France, Ireland and Belgium this week. Parsons said that following the Brexit vote Britain needed to become more outward looking. "There are two schools of thought: They could become Fortress UK and protectionist, with tariffs on New Zealand lamb for example, but in the same breath they want to open up new markets. Britain's lamb trade was mainly within the European Union, which it regarded as "overseas". New Zealand exports less than10,000 tonnes, but tariffs of $70 million are applied, whereas it sends 200,000 tonnes to the United States and pays only $10m in tariffs.
