When Fani made landfall in Puri on Friday morning, it was an extremely severe cyclonic storm with windspeed gusting up to 205kmph. When Cyclone Fani blew over Calcutta, it was still a cyclone but minus the fury that it had packed in Odisha. Sanjib Bandyopadhyay, deputy director general at IMD Calcutta, said Fani lost more fuel because it was a pre-monsoon cyclone.
