It can involve the walls of the heart and its valves, arteries and veins near the heart, according to MedlinePlus, a US medical website. BMJ, a medical journal, states Africa has one of the highest prevalence rates of heart diseases in children and young adults. It cites congenital heart disease and adds the burden is underestimated yet its effects are serious.
