OTTAWA—Facebook risks increasing the public’s mistrust in the platform by refusing to take down “inauthentic” content like doctored videos, Canada’s democratic institutions minister says. Karina Gould told reporters it’s “quite confusing” Facebook officials committed to redouble efforts to crack down on misleading content on Monday, only to tell a House committee Tuesday that they won’t remove doctored videos of politicians. “They clearly agreed on Monday here in Canada that they would take down fake accounts and they would take down inauthentic content,” Gould said. The social media company says it has labelled the video as false, but will not follow YouTube in taking the video down. Critics of the decision have argued the video misleadingly paints Pelosi as impaired, which has offline political consequences for one of America’s most powerful politicians.
