THINK OF the last thing Facebook needed in the throes of its privacy woes, then make it a little worse. TechCrunch reported this week that an app called “Facebook Research” invited people ages 13 to 35 to offer the company access to essentially everything they were doing on their phones. The incident is another strike against Facebook for its failures on privacy and another argument for Congress to act promptly in formulating a tough federal framework. Any limitations Congress imposes on how companies may use consumer data should be stricter still when it comes to children. plan to update the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act so that more minors have heightened protections is a good start.
