In the year-ending 31 December 2018 F1 made a $68 million operating loss which widened from $37 million in 2017 due to accelerating costs and modest revenue expansion. It isn’t a patch on the discrepancy between its forecast for revenue from broadcast fees and the actual amount made by F1. Perhaps testimony to this, F1’s broadcasting revenue in 2018 was actually a staggering $181.1 million lower than the forecast and only rose by 0.4% to $603.9 million. Its forecast was closer than those for any of F1’s other revenue streams and was only $11.2 million higher than the $266.4 million that F1 actually made. The forecast for revenue from miscellaneous sources was the only one which F1 out-performed with the actual total coming to $340 million which was $40.3 million higher than the estimate.
