Why is inter-county GAA no longer categorised as ‘elite’ sport? Speaking to Claire Byrne on RTÉ radio yesterday, the Minister for Sport stressed: “There was no decision taken to remove the GAA from the elite category.”Yet the small print haschanged. “For example, the League of Ireland is a professional league. In that context, it’s difficult not to define inter-county GAA as elite sport. The GAA is committed to playing the leagues and giving clubs a significant period of time to stage their competitions.
