Experts call for more research into low virus infection rate among slum-dwellers

A survey, which ran from Apr 18 to Jul 5, had found a six percent infection rate among the slum residents. Dr Be-Nazir Ahmed, former director general of health services, said the matter cannot be ruled out and a detailed study is needed to find out the cause of the low infection rate. The world’s largest slum in Mumbai was found to have a high infection rate but similar testing was not carried out here, he said. The survey finding of six percent infection rate is also important and it is not a small number.”According to Meerjady Sabrina Flora, former IEDCR director, the low infection rate found in the survey does not carry a lot of weight. The infection rate in the slums might have been low but it is no reason to think that they are immune to the virus.
