The exit polls seemed to indicate that Modi’s campaign strategy had paid dividends. Two exit polls predicted that Modi’s coalition would fall short of that mark. Observers expected that opposition parties would try to cobble together a coalition of their own if Modi’s party stumbled. Some members of the opposition parties emphasized the unreliability of exit polls and the potential for surprises when results are announced Thursday.
