Even with legal equality, LGBT community still uniquely vulnerable to violence and early death

Acceptance of the LGBT community has not been universal and violence … persists as a serious issue in the United States. Among Canadian minority groups, the gay community remains a consistent target of random violence. Until very recently, murders of gay men in select situations could even be considered semi-legal. According to study authors, 42% of the city’s gay male community would be dead before their 65th birthday.
