The main reason for this pay gap seems to be the same in both places: Children hurt mothers’ careers. The birth of a parent's first child disproportionately affects the future earnings of mothers, even in Denmark. Most studies of the pay gap analyze equal pay for equal work. Children, which accounted for 40 per cent of the pay gap in 1980, now account for 80 per cent of it. Researchers say that if men took on more child care responsibilities, it could help shrink the gender pay gap.
