Evacuation orders grow as High Level wildfire continues to burn


CALGARY—Residents along the northern edge of a county border south of High Level, Alta., have been ordered to evacuate as the Chuckegg Creek wildfire expands south. The communities of Keg River, Carcajou, Hawk Hills, and Steen River, as well as the La Crete Ferry Campground, are also under mandatory evacuation orders. Around 5,000 people were ordered to leave High Level and surrounding communities over a week ago, and have been told not to expect to return home before the weekend. The Chuckegg Creek fire, the largest in the province, is still about three kilometres south of High Level, where crews have created a firebreak to protect the community.
