Online propaganda, preventing radicalization on the radar for Calgary police

CALGARY—While physical rallies have thinned out, online propaganda is becoming stronger, according to the Calgary Police Service hate crimes unit. Preventing radicalization, responding to international hate crimes and charting a rise in online propaganda are all part of the Calgary Police Service’s strategy for dealing with radicalization and extremism. The April 2019 report from Alberta-based the Organization for the Prevention of Violence, which found Alberta had a disproportionate representation of hate groups, “painted a pretty poor picture,” said Const. Craig Collins from the hate crimes unit. After the meeting, interim police Chief Steve Barlow said prevention is an important factor in quelling radicalization across Calgary.
