The fabric of 28-year-old Nazira Afzali's dusty pink hijab brushes softly against her face as she tells her remarkable story – a story of overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles to fulfil her dream of getting an education and becoming the first female Afghan lawyer in Christchurch. "I come from the land of war, but now I am living in the land of opportunity." My mother told me I would cry every single night, too scared to sleep, until we left Afghanistan," Afzali says. Afzali went to a school set up by a welfare organisation specially for refugees. In 2018 Afzali graduated to become the first female Afghan lawyer in Christchurch.
