The environment could benefit from a share of the Government's $800 million "shovel-ready" projects fund if Manawatū and Horizons councils are successful in their bids. DAVID UNWIN/STUFF Horizons Regional Council chief executive Michael McCartney wants environmental projects to be extended. Horizons chairwoman Rachel Keedwell said the theme was environmental enhancement, building on regional councils' track record with similar projects. Coastal and estuary enhancement projects included the Manawatū Estuary, the Rangitīkei Estuary, and coastal dunes restoration projects. Further support was sought for iwi management plans and for an environmental enhancement team to undertake the physical work.
