English football’s leaders may defy Fifa’s ban on players wearing poppies on their kit on Armistice Day if the organisation refuses to relax its rules. The Football Association, which received backing from the prime minister’s office yesterday, wants players in the England v Scotland World Cup qualifier at Wembley on November 11 to be permitted to wear the symbol. Theresa May’s spokesman said: “People should be able to wear their poppies with pride and, in a year when we’re commemorating the centenary of the First World War, it’s particularly poignant to remember what sacrifices were made to keep us free.”
