Engineer designs middle seat device that can improve social distancing on planes

Yesterday, Ryanair announced plans for passengers to wear masks on all flights whilst Heathrow Airport is trialling temperature checks. (Image: Florian Barjot/EarthBay)As aviation experts grapple with these problems, one engineer has conceived a design which could help enforce social distancing during flights if needed. The European Commission said today that airlines would not have to leave the middle seat free. French aeronautical engineer Florian Barjot has designed an inexpensive plexiglass model which can fit onto a planes middle seat so passengers sat in the aisle and window can be protected. "But there is still a difference between two or three feet distance and touching an unknown passenger sharing the same armrest.”The model is only a temporary design though for when airlines have to follow social distancing requirements.
