The irony of Elon Musk’s site blocking a link to a small, academic-focused website is thick. More disturbingly, the Twitter account for Mastodon, a software development company making social media software, has been suspended altogether. I’ve been studying the fediverse for years, and many fediverse sites are well-moderated social media systems that are free of harmful content such as hate speech, disinformation and manipulative advertising. The truth is, Musk’s Twitter is failing. Instead, it may be the future of social media.
