I’d discovered a few weeks earlier that my future husband, the eldest of three siblings, was still taking mall photos with Santa Claus. At some point the larger family photos stopped, but our family has continued the tradition, documenting our own three children over the last decade. Sadly, for us and everyone else, there were no Santa photos in December 2020. I couldn’t bring myself to take my kids last year, as it felt tarnished and awkward, so we missed another year of our decades-long family tradition. This year, we’ve finally returned to our family tradition.
